The rate of the increase of radiology imaging demands unfortunately cannot be matched by the rate of the increase of radiologists’ population. While the former is around 15 percent per year, the latter is only 2 percent. Because of this phenomenon, there are today many hospitals that experience difficulty in dealing with amassing radiological images that need to be interpreted as soon as possible. To alleviate such difficulty, many of them send those images to other hospitals where there are available radiologists who can interpret those images. The transmission of those images is usually done under the request of their patients who want to get the latter’s images interpreted. Patients certainly have a strong interest in such transmission because if their radiological images are not interpreted as soon as possible, they have to stay longer in the hospital and waste their money unnecessarily because their doctor is able to treat them medically if she hasn’t receive the interpretation of those images.

This transmission procedure is what called teleradiology. This procedure is done by using an infrastructure consisting of three components. The first component is the transmitting station. From this station, patients’ radiological images are transmitted. The transmission is done through a perfectly secured network, which becomes the second component. The third component, the receiving station, receives the transmitted images. Teleradiologists who receive those images will then interpret those images before resending them to the hospitals that send them. This procedure has been widely practiced by many companies, among which is nighthawk radiology.

This transmission procedure obviously benefits patients very much because it allows them to get their radiological images interpreted much more quickly. It also benefits the hospital in which those patients are treated because it allows that hospital to serve its patients better and thus to improve its reputation. However, patients who want to make use of this procedure have to review their insurance policy to find out whether this procedure is covered by the policy.
